5 Things We Love About Grindstone McAllen

Why do we love our new Grindstone location? Let us count the ways. Situated at the corner of Trenton Rd. and 10th St., Grindstone McAllen offers a perfect location to work on your hustle and have a damned good time doing it. Here are just a few reasons why we love our new office space:

Optimal Convenience

Our new McAllen office space is located in one of the busiest areas of the Rio Grande Valley, meaning there’s plenty of opportunity for success all around. There’s a UPS store within walking distance for your business needs, as well as a nail salon, clothing shops and grocery stores like HEB, Target and nearby Sprouts. There’s truly no good reason not to knock out your to-do list everyday with all of the necessary spots located just seconds away.

A Foodie’s Paradise

The possibilities for a delicious meal are endless at Grindstone McAllen. Our unique location means food choices galore. Jimmy John’s Gourmet Sandwiches is just a few steps away from our office, as are popular eateries like Russo’s New York Pizzeria, Yoko’s Sushi Bar and Starbucks in case the mood strikes you.

Get Fit While You Work

Your health is important, and Grindstone McAllen offers awesome opportunities to get fit during your work day. CycBar is located within our building, so you can take a break to work up a sweat. Gold’s Gym is located right down the road on 10th and Dove, and there are a number of healthy food eateries, such as Fork 2 Fit and Protein House all within walking distance or a short drive away.

Who’s Down For Happy Hour?

A happy life is all about balance. While Grindstone Coworking members are good at being productive, we’re just as good at letting loose. Our proximity to a number of McAllen pubs leaves endless potential for a little after-work fun. From Coast cocktails, to beers at Russo’s, to margaritas at nearby Costa Messa, Happy Hours are about to get a whole lot more fun at Grindstone McAllen.

Enjoy Multiple Spaces

Working at Grindstone McAllen is awesome, but there’s more. Grindstone Coworking members receive access to both of our Edinburg and McAllen offices, so whether you’re driving into the Valley or on your way out, there’s a friendly place to get work done. Our Edinburg office has a conference room and large training room available to reserve, so if you’ve got an important meeting with one person or 20, there’s a fun environment to get together in.

Netflix & Skills

Mix Business with Pleasure with These Hot Netflix Picks

Building your empire can be exhausting. Come the weekend, there’s nothing like a little rest and relaxation to help you recharge and reboot. And we’re not just talking any kind of relaxation.

We’re talkin’ Netflix.

But just because you’re couch surfing all weekend doesn’t mean it has to be mindless. Plenty of today’s hottest shows portray life lessons that can help you elevate your life in different ways. From your business, to your work ethic, and your overall attitude toward life, here are a few binge-worthy shows and flicks to watch and learn from this weekend.

Narcos

The lesson: “Never surrender.”

You gotta give it to Pablo Escobar – he’s a man who let little stand in his way. This famed tale of the Columbian druglord has captivated a wide range of audiences. Watch as a local Robin Hood of sorts takes the global cocaine scene by storm. Whether it’s action, romance, or a tale of perseverance you crave, the life of Pablo Escobar has it all, and will leave you wanting more.

Breaking Bad

The lesson: “You gotta do what you gotta do.”

Breaking Bad follows Walter White on his quest toward both freedom and domination after being diagnosed with cancer, and a world of other problems. It’s the story of how one man crafts his own destiny, shunning conventionalism and throwing caution to the wayside in the process. And while we don’t quite condone establishing your own crystal meth ring, we’ll be damned if this isn’t an inspirational tale for the ages.

Chef’s Table

The lesson: “It’s all in the details.”

Ever wonder why fancy restaurants charge hundreds of dollars for a ten-course meal? You’ll find out why, plus more when you dig into Chef’s Table. A captivating combination of sight, sound and color, this docu-series is a foodie’s dream, and one that will make you salivate as you watch. It follows a handful of international chefs on their quest to Michelin-star status. Becoming an expert at just about anything requires a meticulous attention to details. These world-class chefs have turned chopping, flambéing and sautéing into an art. It’s a fascinating world to explore, whether you’re hungry or not.

The Pursuit of Happiness

“It’s all about perspective.”

Even the most successful entrepreneurs were likely chowing down on Ramen noodles at some point, and not the hip and trendy kind. The road to the top is long and winding, and just because you’re down and out one day doesn’t mean there aren’t brighter times ahead. Never lose hope in a better tomorrow. This applies to business, relationships, and pretty much life in general.

Freelancing Your Way to Freedom in the RGV

Freelancing Your Way to Freedom in the RGV

Freelancing in the RGV

Owning a business can be intimidating. If the prospect of diving head first into owning a business fills you with a sense of dread, you may not be entirely ready for such a huge undertaking. And that’s OK. It may take months, even years, to find the confidence to start your business. In this case, the phrase, “don’t quit your day job” is well intentioned. Instead of quitting your 9-to-5 job on a whim, there are other ways to truly explore the concept of entrepreneurship before commitment.

Freelancing may be your best option for bringing in significant income without the pressure that comes with full-on entrepreneurship. Luckily, there is an ever-growing array of websites to help you on your path to freelance success, though not all are created equal. Upwork.com has proven inexplicably valuable in helping me establish my growing business. Here’s a breakdown of the internet’s most valuable website for freelancers.

Upwork Ecosystem

The largest of its kind on the web, Upwork.com is where a lot of freelancers go to jumpstart their careers. Born from a merger between freelance heavy-hitters Elance.com and Odesk.com, Upwork.com attracts millions of clients and freelancers, utilizing a comprehensive interview process to provide a perfect match.

With an almost-overwhelming amount of job prospects, the Upwork job board is easy to navigate. Whether you’re a graphic designer, a writer, photographer or accountant, Upwork may be just the avenue you need to gain the confidence to venture out on your own. There is absolutely no cost to set up and get started. Simply create your user profile, upload your resume, then begin bidding on projects based on your desired income and experience. A growing number of large companies are joining by the day, many recognizing the convenience that comes from employing remote workers on a contract basis.

The Upwork interview process showcases the very best of the internet’s potential. Skype calls with people from all over the world are not uncommon. I’ve encountered dozens of international clients throughout my time on Upwork.

While there is a fee to utilize Upwork’s services, they pale in comparison to the perks. Upwork guarantees payment on contract gigs, meaning if the client decides not to pay up, the website will have your back. As someone who has lost over $2,000 to unpaid invoices, the security that comes with Upwork is invaluable, and can save major headaches and heartaches along the way.

Like most things in life, true effort is your best bet for success. Whether it’s starting your own business, jumpstarting your freelance career, or even maintaining personal relationships, you’ll most likely get what you put in. Before you rule out launching your own business, experiment with Upwork.com to see if working on your own accord is right for you.
