The AfterMath: Grindstone Coworking Christmas Party

Depending on where you work, office parties can range from being a drag to a cool office outing. But what happens when you work at a shared office with multiple businesses? In this blog, we are going to break down the Grindstone Coworking Christmas party with something we call the AfterMath.

A Breakdown of the Numbers

17th of December: Grindstone Coworking hosted its 2nd annual Christmas party. We are a shared office community made up of 45 small business owners, freelancers, and mobile workers.

8 Kick Ass Wall Lights: Our office party was in the same place we work almost every day but that did not bring down the party feel. The space looked completely different as soon as you opened the door. How did we create this party vibe? LIGHTING! Joe Rocks entertainment brought over eight awesome programmable wall lights that really set the mood for the night.

6 Strings of Mark Cavazos: We wanted more than a couple of playlists to set the tone so we hired Mark Cavazos to help us get the party going. Armed with a guitar, mixer, and a mic, Mark brought the jams! The jam session took twists and turns throughout the night with members jumping on the mic to take the lead. Additionally, there were crowd sing-a-longs and people dancing in the empty space which turned into a dance floor.

5 Decked Out Doors: “Competition breeds innovation.” Our door decorating contest brought out the innovators in our bunch. Five teams competed for some prizes and most importantly bragging rights in our first annual Christmas door decorating contest.

4 Committees: Drinks, Food, Attendance, and Entertainment Committees made up of members of our community helped pave the way for a smooth and amazing party. A special thank you to Markus Villarreal, Melissa Gauna, Nick Cantu, Angel Melgoza, Sara Cantu, Juan Rodriguez, David Casarez, and everyone else who helped make this party a success.

2 Craft Beers: Our friends at L&F brought some cheer with Rogue 7 hop IPA and Hijack from the Infamous Brewing Co out of Austin,Texas. They both were excellent, flavorful additions to the open bar set up by our drink committee.

1 Photographer: A quick and creative photo booth set up and some action shots from the evening are thanks to Lee Jinks of Jinks Realty. I think the work speaks for itself. See below:

It was a party for the ages. Thank you to all who made Grindstone Christmas a special one and Merry Christmas to you and your loved ones.

Meet Sara Cantu, the newest member in our Member Spotlight Series. Raised in Edinburg, she is an up-and-coming entrepreneur participating in the Hive Effect. We sat down with Sara in a rapid fire Q&A to find out a little more about who she is, what she does, and how she integrates Grindstone Coworking and the Hive Effect into her growing business.

Q: Tell us about your business? What do you help your clients do?

I run my business as a freelance writer specializing in online content for websites. This covers anything from online magazines, to blogs and e-commerce marketing material. My clients are as unique as the topics I write about.

Q: How did you get started?

I started as an intern with RGV Magazine in 2009, but my passion for writing dates back further.

Q: How long have you been with your business?

I’ve been a full-time freelancer for a little over three years now.

Q: Where did your passion for said business come from?

I wrote my first “novel” (10 pages, typed, in 20-pt font) when I was 9. I guess you could say I’ve had an interest in writing ever since.

Q: What’s your creative outlet?

My entire career is a creative outlet, which I’m very thankful for.

Q: Where is your go-to place to relax?

South Padre Island, soaking up some sun.

Q: Where is your go-to place to fun?

Fun is everywhere when you surround yourself with the right people.

Q: What’s your favorite book?

The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe really sparked my imagination as a kid.

Q: What’s your favorite part about working at Grindstone Coworking?

The people! Everyone’s been friendly since the day I walked through the door. It creates a great environment.

Q: What’s the best advice you’ve received that has helped you with your business?

No one is going to make the magic happen for you. If you want to achieve something, you have to get off your a** and go for it.

Q: What kind of music do you like listening to while you work?

Classic rock, gangster rap and classical music. Really depends on my mood.

Q: What streaming service do you use? Pandora, Spotify, Apple, Other?

Pandora. I’m still waiting for someone to explain Spotify to me.

Q: Apple or Android?

Apple. All day.

Q: What’s one tip for mobile workers you would like to share?

Keep your receipts! Easier said than done, I know.

Q: What’s your favorite social media platform? Why?

Snapchat, because it’s the most fun and least thought-provoking.

Q: What lead you to own your own business rather than go work for a company?

I’ve never been big on rules, so the idea of working for myself and setting my own schedule was always appealing to me.

Q: How is Grindstone/ Hive Effect helping you and your business?

Working at the Grindstone has helped me establish a more fulfilling work/life balance, and the Hive Effect has helped me think clearly about the direction I’d like to take my business.

Edinburg EDC and Grindstone Present: Beyond the Boost

Edinburg EDC and Grindstone Present: Beyond the Boost

Beyond the Boost at Grindstone Coworking

A room full of excited entrepreneurs and social media specialists got to take part in this exciting seminar. Beyond the Boost was a workshop sponsored by Hive Effect at Grindstone Coworking. Hive Effect, an entrepreneur development initiative, is in partnership with the Edinburg Economic Development Corporation and Grindstone Coworking. The purpose of the class was to put an expert on Facebook marketing in front of local businesses. The class gave insights on how Facebook can boost their business. Our guest speaker Bobby Villarreal a digital & social media marketer at Triggers Media gave a insightful talk on the finer points of Facebook marketing.

To stay relevant, businesses need to be using Facebook to market themselves. This is where Mr. Villarreal was able to speak about the tools around Facebook marketing. Key points that the attendees walked away with were: always have a strategy, constantly evaluate your strategy, and know your audience. Mr. Villarreal was gracious enough to walk us through how Facebook provides tools that make it possible to achieve any of your marketing goals. With this new knowledge all the participants walked away with the fresh breath of confidence they needed to take their marketing strategy to the next level.

Food was graciously sponsored by the Edinburg Economic Development Corporation. I’d like to thank Bobby Villarreal of Triggers Media for giving a great talk on Facebook Marketing. Lastly, thanks to Hive Effect for hosting the class and being a great resource for entrepreneurs in the Rio Grande Valley. If you’d like to learn more about Hive Effect visit for more information.
